Reviews
Synopsis
The series format is a step by step tutorial intended for the Intermediate to Advanced programmer looking to be challenged in a new area. Each book in the series meets the 2 aims of a developer when learning a new technology, firstly to learn the techniques and tools, but secondly how to accomplish their goals with that particular technology. Many other books aimed at this market fall short of the Intermediate to Advanced label. Although containing advanced material, many have long elaborate introductions, which are at the expense of more technical information later in the book. The Professional Projects series contains only a brief introduction, and quickly moves the reader onto more challenging material. Sections Overview Section Lays the groundwork for understanding the particular development issues surrounding the uses for the application. Projects Section Presented projects are increasingly more complex in an attempt to guide the reader through practical development scenarios and to represent real world examples. Beyond the lab Serves as a summary for what the reader has just learned and roadmap for readers to search for further information. It also resents a skills path and suggests related technologies that need to be studied. Reference Appendix Acts as a quick reference and covers the main commands that a developer will need to use. An invaluable tool to a new developer.

Beginning Object Oriented Programming With Visual Basic 2005 From Novice to Professional - Apress - 2006

ISBN: 1-59059-576-9

eginning Object-Oriented Programming with VB 2005 is a comprehensive resource of correct coding procedures. Author Daniel Clark takes you through all the stages of a programming project, including analysis, modeling, and development, all using object-oriented programming techniques and VB .NET.

Clark explores the structure of classes and their hierarchies, as well as inheritance and interfaces. He also introduces the .NET Framework and the Visual Studio integrated development environment, or IDE. A real-world case study walks you through the design of a solution. You can then transform the design into a functional VB .NET application.

The application includes a graphical user interface (GUI), a business logic class library, and integration with a back-end database. Throughout the book, you'll explore the fundamentals of software design, object-oriented programming, Visual Basic .NET 2.0, and the Unified Modeling Language (UML).

Daniel Clark is a Microsoft Most Valued Professional (MVP), Microsoft Certified Trainer, Microsoft Certified Solution Developer, and Microsoft Certified Database Administrator. For the last 7 years, he has been developing applications and training others how to develop applications using Microsoft technologies. Daniel's training experience runs the gamut from training novice programmers to training experienced developers on the nuances of COM programming. He finds particular satisfaction in turning new developers on to the thrill of developing and designing object-oriented applications.

Object Oriented Programming is an interesting topic to learn for every programmer. There are only few books which completely analyzes Object Oriented Programming concepts with a .NET language. Beginning Object-Oriented Programming with VB 2005: From Novice to Professional by Daniel R. Clark thoroughly examines the various concepts related to Object Oriented Programming in an elaborate manner by using Visual Basic 2005. The book is divided into 4 parts. While the first three parts examines the core aspects, the final part contains three useful appendixes.

Part 1 examines about the fundamentals of Object Oriented Programming with special reference to design aspects. It also includes a chapter with a case study, which will definitely help the readers to learn the concepts very easily.

Part 2 covers some of the important concepts related to classes and collections with the help of source codes. It also includes a chapter about the implementation of object collaboration with the help of examples. The author has provided the examples under the heading Activity. Each one of them has been explained with relevant steps and source codes. Some of the activities are even accompanied by screenshots and some questions. The answers to these questions are provided at the end of the relevant chapter.

Part 3 examines about the development of Windows and Web applications in addition to the development and consumption of web services. This part also demonstrates the implementation of business logic with a comprehensive explanation. In the end, the author provides some guidelines to learn more about the topic and the path for earning a certification from Microsoft.

As stated earlier, the final part deals with three useful appendixes. I feel that they are exclusively written for beginners. It covers basic programming fundamentals and a short description about the various exception handling techniques. The author also examines how to install the sample databases using SQL 2000, SQL 2005 and its Express Edition in addition to verification of database installation with Visual Studio. The source codes, the complete Table of Contents and a sample chapter can be downloaded from the website of the publisher.

From my point of view, the book is mainly oriented for Intermediate and Advanced Visual Basic 2005 developers and for those who are interested to learn some of the core concepts behind Object Oriented Programming. I feel that some of the initial chapters will be little hard to understand for a novice programmer. It requires some effort from their side to grasp the subject matter. Moreover, the price of the book is somewhat higher. In my opinion, the author has worked hard to explain the difficult concepts in a lucid style with nice examples and the book will be a good addition for a developer’s library. I hope a C# version of the book will be soon released by the publisher for the benefit of C# programmers.

Pro Visual Basic 2005 and the .NET 2.0 Platform
ISBN: 1590595785
ISBN-13: 9781590595787

With the release of .NET 2.0, the Visual Basic 2005 language has been updated with numerous new programming constructs (XML code documentation, operator overloading, generics, and partial types just to name a few!). Now more than ever, choosing a .NET language boils down to personal preference (rather than a language's feature set).

However, to effectively make use of these new language features, developers must have a rock-solid grounding in object-oriented technology, assemblies, and the core .NET technologies. The purpose of Pro VB 2005 and the .NET 2.0 Platform, Second Edition is to provide you with such a foundation by diving deep into the language of VB 2005 and the platform of .NET. Thus, rather than simply showing how a code wizard can generate all the code on your behalf, this text will first show you how to author the code yourself so you can alter the generated code to your liking.

Beyond learning all the details of the VB 2005 programming language, you will also dive into the details of building desktop applications (using Windows Forms) and websites (via ASP.NET 2.0), and how to interact with relational databases (à la ADO.NET). Furthermore, you will explore how to build distributed applications using the .NET remoting layer and XML web services. Rest assured, this text will expose you to all the major services of the .NET platform and put you in the perfect position for further exploration.

Programming Visual Basic 2005
By Jesse Liberty
...............................................
Publisher: O'Reilly
Pub Date: September 2005
ISBN: 0-596-00949-6
Pages: 568

This newest programming guide by bestselling author Jesse Liberty isn't your typical Visual Basic book. It's not a primer on the language, and it won't dull your brain with arguments hyping .NET either. Its goal, rather, is to make you immediately productive, creating Windows and Web applications using Visual Basic and its associated tools.

Written for experienced Visual Basic programmers (from either a VB6 or VB .NET background), the book shows how Visual Basic 2005 can be used to rapidly build modern web applications and new "Smart Client" applications, which combine the power of individual computers with network data resources to deliver a rich interactive experience. You'll also learn the details of building robust object-oriented applications, and a host of especially dangerous pitfalls to avoid when programming with Visual Basic 2005.

What makes this book different is what's not included. There's no introduction to Visual Basic, no explanation of how it fits into the .NET world.
